Thomas W., the founder of the Law Offices of Thomas W., LLC, has over 18 years of experience in environmental litigation, product liability litigation, automotive-related disputes and construction and/or real estate disputes. He is a true trial attorney; having tried 100s of cases, argued cases in the highest courts in the State of Maryland, and has successfully mediated cases to favorable resolutions. He has also spent much of his career studying, participating in, and advising clients on starting and operating businesses in the real estate arena and auto-related businesses. When Tom started practicing law, he wanted to combine his life-long passions with his law practice: Construction, Real Estate, and Autos.
Construction and Real Estate Law
For over 18 years, Tom has represented a wide range of contractors; from small startup subcontractors to large, national contractors. He represents general contractors (including developers and site contractors) and subcontractors (for example, framers, plumbers, electricians, drywall installers, masons, siding installers, hvac contractors, utility contracts, glass installers, etc.) in construction disputes involving condominiums, townhouse communities, single family homes and commercial construction. These disputes range from simple collection matters to complicated construction defect lawsuits.
Tom has also successfully resolved disputes in Real Estate transactions over his years of practice. This includes defects in title, survey disputes and other complications that can surface during title searches. Further, he has successfully negotiated and closed real estate investments for clients over the years of his practice.
Growing up, construction was Tom’s family business. Literally. His grandfather was a builder. His uncles were master plumbers, property managers and utility contractors. His father worked as a maintenance contractor at a large company for many years. Tom has worked around construction sites since the age of 11. As a property investor, Tom is still not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get dirty renovating and restoring houses. While unique for a practicing attorney, this is commonplace for Tom. With his knowledge and background, Tom can provide unique insight and perspective to clients in assessing potential risks, negotiating contracts or advocating on their behalf.
Auto and Auto Dealer Law
Tom grew up working on anything with an engine with his father, from lawn mowers, to mopeds, to motorcycles, to cars and trucks. At nine, Tom had his first motorcycle. At thirteen, he was racing motor-cross and rebuilding racing bikes’ engines. At fourteen, he and his father did their first engine swap in a muscle car. Today, he is an avid car enthusiast and owns several classic cars doing all of his own work. Tom enjoys weekend get-a-ways to the garage to weld quarters on an old car or make that small block chevy run a little better. His most recent project is a 1966 Ford Mustang, which will be his daughter’s first car!
Growing up around cars, he has intimate knowledge of the auto industry and how these businesses operate. So, Tom combined his passion with cars and the law. He represents both car dealers and individuals involving disputes over automobiles, including sales of vehicles (also known as “lemon law cases”) and disputes over repairs made on vehicles. Tom has also acted as a mediator in auto disputes. He has represented several auto-related businesses in the sale and acquisitions of the businesses. Finally, with his extensive knowledge and experience with environmental law, he has assisted auto businesses with zone and environmental compliance to successfully and legally operate their businesses
Tom has extensive trial experience in environmental exposure lawsuits. Tom has successfully tried numerous complex toxic exposure cases, including over thirty jury trials in just the last three years. Since opening his own practice, Tom has tried numerous cases including two lead poisoning cases in Baltimore City wherein he successfully obtained defense verdicts. He represents parties in cases involving lead paint, petroleum products, asbestos, chlorinated solvents, carbon monoxide, phosgene, arsenic, mold, pesticides and other environmental exposure cases
Tom has also consulted with clients in handling state and local agency violation notices, advised private financing institutions on the environmental impact on Real Estate, and counseled property investors on proper ways to protect themselves from tenant exposure to toxins.
